Free concerts scheduled for Crossroads music festival

The Lubbock Convention and Visitors Bureau has confirmed the following free concerts for the Crossroads of Texas Music Festival, formerly known as Buddy Holly Week.

Sept. 2 Daron Norwood will headline a concert of country music from 9:30 p.m. to midnight at The Library. Cactus Jack will open the show.
Sept. 3 The 1950s band The Crewcuts will headline a concert of rock ‘n’ roll music from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on an outdoor stage in the Depot District. Opening will be Lubbock-based swing band Mike Pritchard’s Blue Thunder & The Lightning Horns.
Sept. 4 Local bands will perform from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on an outdoor stage in the Depot District. The itinerary: 1 p.m., Spilling Poetry; 2 p.m., Cactus Jack; 4 p.m., Klif Notes; and 5:30 p.m., Chuck McClure & Double Take.
Sept. 4 The Big Bopper Jr. (headlining), Chris Montez, Freddy “Boom Boom” Cannon, Charlie Thomas, The Coasters and The Rankins, with Rockin Robin serving as a backup band, will be featured in concert from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on an outdoor stage in the Depot District. This concert was financed with $30,000 approved by the City Council from hotel-motel tax funds.
Sept. 5 Local bands will perform from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on an outdoor stage in the Depot District. The itinerary: 1 p.m., Falling Jupiter; 2:30 p.m., The Ingrid Kaiter band; and 4 p.m., RiverWind.
Sept. 5 Contemporary band The Rankins will play 1950s and 1960s music from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on an outdoor stage in the Depot District.
Sept. 5 The 1950s band The Diamonds will perform rock ‘n’ roll music from 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on an outdoor stage in the Depot District.

Sept. 3 The official ribbon cutting and grand opening of The Buddy Holly Center, located at 19th Street and Avenue G, is slated for 4:30 p.m. Stan Perkins, son of the late Carl Perkins, will entertain afterward in the center’s courtyard. There is no admission charge.
Sept. 3 The Crickets and Nanci Griffith, backed by the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, will be featured in concert at 8 p.m. at the Civic Center Theater. The concert is being held in conjunction with the opening of the Buddy Holly Center. The orchestra will be conducted by LSO music director Albert-George Schram. Reserved-seat tickets priced at $47 (includes after-show reception with The Crickets; only 60 tickets in this price range), $32, $25 and $17 (including the $2 handling fee) are on sale at the Select-A-Seat outlets at Dollar Western Wear, Luskey’s/Ryan’s Western Wear, Memphis Place Mall, both Ralph’s Records & Tapes locations and the Texas Tech University Center’s ticket booth.
Sept. 3-5 and 10-11 The musical biography “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story” will be performed for the fourth consecutive year at 8 p.m. Sept. 3-5 and 10-11, and also at 2 p.m. Sept. 4, at the Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Ave. Direction is by Don Caldwell and Jeremy Daniel. Sean Keller will star as Buddy Holly. Reserved-seat tickets, priced at $20 and $15, can be purchased in advance by calling 762-3233.
Sept. 4 Johnny D & The Rocket 88s will headline a rock ‘n’ roll concert sponsored by the Caprock Classic Car Club at 7:30 p.m. at the Fair Park Coliseum at the Panhandle-South Plains Fairgrounds. General admission tickets, priced at $11 (including $1 handling fee), are on sale at the Select-A-Seat outlets at Dollar Western Wear, Luskey’s/Ryan’s Western Wear, Memphis Place Mall, both Ralph’s Records & Tapes locations and the Texas Tech University Center’s ticket booth.
