Holly museum will house Lubbock Fine Arts Center
Those assuming that the Buddy Holly Center, opening today, is limited only to the Buddy Holly Gallery and the Texas Musicians Hall of Fame no doubt will be pleasantly surprised to discover a plethora of visual fine art on display as well.
The center, after all, also was conceived from the outset as a much-needed new home for the Lubbock Fine Arts Center, formerly located at 2600 Ave. P.
The first exhibit in the Fine Arts Gallery at the Buddy Holly Center is titled “Retrospective 15″ and has been selected by the Texas Commission on the Arts as “one of the top cultural events in the state this fall,” reminded Connie Gibbons, the City of Lubbock’s director of cultural arts.
It will remain on display through Oct. 8 at the Fine Arts Gallery, which is open to visitors at no charge.
The exhibit was designed to celebrate the past 15 years of cultural arts programs, exhibitions and educational initiatives provided by the Lubbock Fine Arts Center.
The 36 artists who participated in past visual arts exhibitions and have returned to display new work include: Future Akins, Lisa Beaman, Ron Boling, Alfredo Bustinza, John Chinn, Alonzo Davis, Rick Dingus, Ken Dixon, Eddie Dominguez, Carol Fitzgerald, Denny Fraze, Tina Fuentes, Jennifer Gardner, Hugh Gibbons, Robly Glover, Juan Granados, Benito Huerta and Chris Irick.
Also, Lahib Jaddo, James Johnson, Eleanor Kreneck, Lynwood Kreneck, Jesse Lott, Cesar Martinez, Therese May, Vicki Meek, Jesus Moroles, Terry Morrow, Patrick Nagatani, Sherry Owens, Stephen Reynolds, Art Shirer, Nancy Slagle, Steve Teeters, Sara Walters and Dee Wolff will be included.
In addition to the exhibition itself, three related events are planned for Saturday:
10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Huerta’s lecture will focus on the technical and visual ideas expressed in the gallery’s featured works.
10 a.m. to noon, Meek will oversee a special installation construction for children.
2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Fitzgerald will oversee a children’s set design activity. Clay, cardboard and other media will be used to create a special story line.
Workshops, lectures and panel discussions will continue through October.
